Catherine Jordan

Catherine Jordan is a certified Master Craftsman in the Counted Thread, Crewel and Color programs from the Embroiderer's Guild of America and past president of the Virginia Guild of Needlewomen in Richmond, Virginia. She is a juried member of EGA's artist group, Fiber Forum, and raises cashmere goats for hand spinning, felting and dyeing. Her work can be seen at www.catherinesdesigns.net.

Reversible Cross Stitch: Alphabets, Monograms and Ciphers

Learning to do reversible cross stitch opens up a world of opportunity for exploring more finishing options for projects that will be seen from both sides such as bookmarks, table and household linens, hand towels, baby bibs, afghans and blankets. Our project for this class will be a monogrammed table linen on Wichet Imports, Inc. 28 count Apple Blossom Linen or Zweigart's Silvretta 28 count fabric (student's choice, both included in kit). Students will select their thread colors from Catherine's wonderful collection of over dyed palettes. In this class we will exploreall the tips and techniques of reversible cross stitch including how to move around following a graphed design and beginning and ending invisibly, so that your work is as lovely on the front as on the back.

Reversible Edgings

Two beautiful completely reversible pulled thread technique finishes will complement any table linen or heirloom which is not planned to be framed. The Three-Sided stitch and Nun Stitch are both secure edgings for linens and each has a unique look. Whether you want an open, lacy look or a simpled fringed edge, both of these techniques are beautiful finishes and perfect for reversible work! Our project will be a table linen on Wichet Imports, Inc. Apple Blossom 28 count linen and Zweigart 28 count Antique White linen. Pair this class with Reversible Cross Stitch: Alphabets, Monograms and Ciphers and you will have an heirloom gift finished before it is time to head home!

Contemporary Quaker Medallions

Traditional Quaker medallions combined with contemporary surface embroidery techniques and over dyed threads to renew these beautiful traditional motifs! This class will explore the use of Turkey work for tails for our squirrels which symbolize plentiful blessings. Detached Buttonhole wings for the bluebirds of happiness make these birds practically fly off the surface of your linen. This class will expand your stitch repertoire, adding dimension and interest to surrounding flat stitching as you work with beautiful over dyed threads that add magnificent shading with no effort! The project is worked on 32 count linen in student's choice of antique white or hand dyed linen.

Friendship Sampler Booklets

These small friendship booklets were designed to give as gifts for your friends, family and loved ones filled with special notes and affirmations. The cover is worked on 32 count linen primarily over 1 linen thread. It is neatly finished with a Four-Sided stitch fringed edge which makes into the booklet cover. These booklets are great pick-me-ups for those under the weather or needing some TLC. Make a special one for yourself and have your friends sign it! Students will select a color palette from Catherine's extensive collection of over dyed threads so that each booklet is a unique and special heirloom. Students may also select a hand dyed linen or antique white on which to work.

Animals Rule!

A completely reversible ruler embellished with animals, flowers, trees and sunshine will guide you through the tips and techniques of making your work exactly the same on both the front and back! This class will introduce you to the secrets of beginning and ending your threads invisibly, making completely reversible straight lines, reversible cross stitch, how to travel around invisibly when the stitches are not right next to each other and sating filling for reversible solid areas so that your work is perfect when viewed from either the front or the back! Our ruler is worked in delicately over dyed cotton floss to add exquisite shading to each motif. This beautiful project fits perfectly into an acrylic ruler which allows for viewing of the neatly finished reverse side of your work. The techniques you learn in this class will assist you in all areas of your needlework so that you will no longer fear anyone seeing the back of your work!

Introduction to Fabric Painted Landscapes

Explore the possibilities of adding color to your work with a small painted landscape complete with a home, pond, tiny animals and a beautifully landscaped yard! This class is an introduction to fabric painting which is a fast and easy method of expanding a composition's color palette and making your work more interesting and eye-catching! Counted and surface embroidery stitches worked in over dyed cotton floss add to the color experience with accents and texture. The project is finished with the four-sided finished edge and mounted invisibly (without glue) on a paper maché box. Students will receive the Jacquard Textile Fabric paint set that can be used for future projects.

Easy Finishing: Coats & Clark Sewing Tins

This project is a quick and easy finishing project to make a delightful sewing kit! Pre-finished Zweigart Stitchband is used to make a lining with pockets for accessories and the liner for the bottom with your name or initials. The kit includes: Coats & Clark Commemorative tin, basket pin cushion accessory with wool and pins, magnet holders, gold scissors, gold needle, stitchband liners for sides and bottom, complete directions with script alphabet to personalize liner, needles in felt and finishing materials. Want to learn more about when to use which needle? Do you know the difference among sharps, quilting, darners, embroidery, tapestry, chenille and milliners? How about some alternate uses of needles including using the tapestry #18 needle for opening the holes of eyelets to make them prefectly round or a tapestry #20 needle as a laying tool? In this class, you will receive the Colonial Needle Company's Ultimate Collection of 100 fine English needles as well as J&P Coats 100 Embroidery Stitches booklet; this booklet is a concise and well-illustrated reference of stitches organized by flat, lopped, linked, knotted, composite, couching and filling, drawn thread, canvas, pulled thread and insertion stitches. Even cross stitch is included! A wonderful reference to keep handy for new ideas and techniques.
